Presbyopia

If you’ve started holding your phone farther away to read it, you’re not alone.

That is one of the most common signs of presbyopia—a normal age-related change that makes it harder for your eyes to focus on things up close.

Why Does This Happen?

Inside your eye is a clear lens that helps you focus. When you’re young, the lens can change shape easily to focus on something close.

As you get older, the lens becomes less flexible. Your eye can’t adjust as easily for close-up vision, so small print may start looking blurry.

Presbyopia usually becomes noticeable in your 40s and continues to change with age.

What Might You Notice?

You may find yourself:

  • Holding your phone or book farther away
  • Needing more light to read
  • Struggling with small print
  • Getting tired eyes or headaches after reading
  • Taking longer to focus when looking from near to far

These changes can happen gradually, so you may not notice them right away.

Can Presbyopia Be Corrected?

Yes. Dr. Van can check your vision during a comprehensive eye exam and determine what correction works best for you.

Depending on your vision and daily needs, options may include:

  • Reading glasses
  • Prescription glasses
  • Bifocals or progressive lenses
  • Contact lenses
