Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia, also called nearsightedness, is a common vision condition that makes distant objects look blurry while things up close are usually easier to see.

You may notice it when reading road signs, seeing the board at school, recognizing people from a distance, or driving at night.

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the eye focuses light in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This is often because the eye is longer than normal or because of the shape of the cornea or lens.

Myopia often develops during childhood and may change as the eyes grow. Family history can also increase the chance of developing it.

Signs of Myopia

Common signs include:

  • Blurry distance vision
  • Squinting to see clearly
  • Sitting close to the TV or classroom board
  • Difficulty seeing road signs
  • Eyestrain or headaches
  • Trouble seeing clearly at night

Children may not always realize that their vision is blurry, which is one reason regular eye exams are important.

How Is Myopia Diagnosed?

A comprehensive eye exam can determine whether you have myopia and how much vision correction you need. Dr. Van can also check the overall health of your eyes during the exam.

How Is Myopia Corrected?

Myopia can usually be corrected with:

  • Eyeglasses
  • Contact lenses
  • Refractive surgery for some adults

For children and teenagers whose myopia is getting worse, Dr. Van may also discuss myopia management to help slow its progression.

Myopia and Eye Health

Mild or moderate myopia is usually manageable with proper vision correction. However, higher levels of myopia are associated with a greater risk of certain eye problems, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts.

Regular eye exams with Dr. Van can help monitor changes in your vision and eye health.
