Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is an eye condition that affects the **macula**, the small area in the center of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. AMD can make activities like reading, driving, or recognizing faces more difficult.
AMD is more common as we get older. It can develop slowly, and early AMD may not cause noticeable changes in vision. Regular eye exams can help Dr. Van look for early changes and monitor your eye health.
What Are the Signs of AMD?
AMD mainly affects central vision, while side vision is usually not affected in the early stages.
Possible signs include:
- Blurry or less detailed central vision
- Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
- Trouble reading or seeing fine details
- Difficulty recognizing faces
- A dark, blurry, or missing spot in the center of your vision
If you notice new changes in your vision, especially wavy or distorted lines, schedule an eye exam.
What Are the Types of AMD?
There are two main types of AMD: dry AMD and wet AMD.
Dry AMD is the more common type. It happens when the light-sensitive cells in the macula gradually become damaged. Vision changes can develop slowly over time.
Wet AMD is less common but can cause faster and more serious changes in central vision. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak blood or fluid.
Dry AMD can sometimes progress to a more advanced form called geographic atrophy. Some people with dry AMD can also develop wet AMD, so regular monitoring is important.
How Is AMD Found?
During an eye exam, Dr. Van checks the health of your eyes and looks for changes in the retina and macula. Depending on your eye health and risk factors, additional testing may be recommended to get a closer look at the retina.
If AMD needs treatment or evaluation by an eye specialist, Dr. Van can help coordinate a referral and continue monitoring your eye health.
